Cushing, Caleb (17 January 1800–02 January 1879), lawyer and politician, was born in Salisbury, Massachusetts, the son of John Newmarch Cushing, a shipmaster and merchant, and Lydia Dow. In 1802 the family moved to Newburyport, where Caleb’s mother died when he was ten. At Harvard he developed a lifelong interest in science, mathematics, and world literature. After graduating in 1817, a law career seemed appropriate for someone with literary ambitions, a love of public speaking, and extensive family contacts....
