Burnett, Peter Hardeman (15 November 1807–17 May 1895), first governor of California, was born in Nashville, Tennessee, the son of George Burnet, a carpenter and farmer, and Dorothy Hardeman Burnet. He grew up in modest circumstances and moved with his parents first to a farm around age four and later, in fall 1817, to Howard County, Missouri. In 1826 he returned to Tennessee, where he clerked at a hotel for $100 a year and later at a store for double that amount. It was around the same time that he added a second “t” to his surname—making it “more complete and emphatic”—and was followed in his example by his brothers. Burnett married Harriet W. Rodgers on 20 August 1828; the couple had six children....
