Rush, Richard (29 August 1780–30 July 1859), statesman and diplomat, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Benjamin Rush, a physician and signer of the Declaration of Independence, and Julia Stockton. Rush graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1797, the youngest in his class. He then read law with William Lewis, a leading figure in Philadelphia legal circles, and was admitted to the bar in 1800.
