Paddleford, Clementine (27 Sept. 1898–13 Nov. 1967), food journalist, was born in Stockdale, Kansas, the daughter of Jennie and Solon Paddleford; she had a brother, Glenn, and a sister who died in childhood. She grew up on a farm and was close to her mother. A famous quote is often credited to Jennie Paddleford, who told her young daughter: “Never grow a wishbone, daughter, where your backbone ought to be” (Alexander and Harris, p. 9)....
