Gold, Jonathan (28 July 1960–21 July 2018), food and music critic, was born in South Los Angeles, the eldest of three sons in a Jewish family. His father, Irwin Gold, aspired to become a professor but curtailed his doctoral studies in American literature when he caught polio.
