Jones, Charles Colcock, Jr. (28 October 1831–19 July 1893), lawyer, archaeologist, and historian, was born in Savannah, Georgia, the son of Charles Colcock Jones, a Presbyterian clergyman, professor, and wealthy plantation owner, and Mary Jones. His youth was spent in Liberty County, Georgia, moving by season among the three plantations of his parents (“Arcadia,” “Montevideo,” and “Maybank”) while his father worked as a missionary to slaves on surrounding plantations, and in Columbia, South Carolina, where his father served two terms (1837–1838 and 1848–1850) as a professor of church history and polity at Columbia Theological Seminary....
