Stephens, John Lloyd (28 November 1805–13 October 1852), writer and archaeologist, was born in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, the son of Benjamin Stephens, a merchant, and Clemence Lloyd Stephens. When Stephens was thirteen months old, the family moved to New York City. He began his education in public school at age six and in 1815 entered the Classical School.
