Murray, Lindley (22 April 1745–16 January 1826), grammarian and Quaker moralist, was born in Swetara, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of Mary Lindley and Robert Murray. His father’s success as a merchant took the family from North Carolina to New York City. Lindley and his brother, John Murray, Jr., were sent to the Friends School in Philadelphia but were then summoned as apprentices in their father’s firm, Murray, Sansom & Co., which became the largest New York shipowners. Strunk, William, Jr. (01 July 1869–26 September 1946), educator and grammarian, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of William Strunk, Sr., and Ella Garretson Strunk. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1890 with an A.B. and was an instructor in mathematics at the Rose Polytechnical Institute in Terra Haute, Indiana (1890–1891). He then went to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he was an instructor in English (1891–1898) while earning his Ph.D. there (1896).
