Gregory, John (17 May 1879–21 February 1958), sculptor and educator, was born in London, England, the son of John Gregory, a shipmaster, and Amelia Elizabeth Read. Gregory’s family moved to New Zealand around 1887, but domestic problems caused Gregory and his mother to return to England, where she supported them as a nurse. In 1893 they moved to Washington, D.C. For three years Gregory was a junior clerk in the U.S. Senate, and from 1897 to 1899 he worked for the Columbia Recording Corporation in Bridgeport, Connecticut....

Stone, Horatio (25 December 1808–25 August 1875), sculptor and lecturer, was born in Jackson, Washington County, New York, the son of Reuben Stone and Nancy Fairchild, farmers. He began wood sculpting at an early age, but his father preferred him to be about his farm chores. As a result Stone left home abruptly and didn’t communicate with his parents for many years.
