Douglas, Marjory Stoneman (07 April 1890–14 May 1998), author and environmentalist, was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the daughter of Florence Lillian Trefethen Stoneman, who went by the name of Lillian, and Frank Bryant Stoneman, a businessman and newspaper editor. When Marjory was three her father's business failed, and the family moved to Providence, Rhode Island. Further business reverses took a toll on Lillian Stoneman's mental health and resulted in a nervous breakdown. Not long thereafter, Lillian separated from her husband and, with her six-year-old daughter, traveled to Taunton, Massachusetts, to live with her parents and unmarried sister....

McCrackin, Josephine (1838-1920), writer and conservationist

McCrackin, Josephine (25 November 1838–21 December 1920), writer and conservationist, was born in Westphalia, Prussia, the daughter of Georg Woempner (or Wompner), a former member of the Hanoverian army and a civil-service surveyor for Prussia, and Charlotte Hartman. The Woempner family emigrated to the United States in 1846 when Josephine was eight, settling in St. Louis. She was educated privately and in convent schools. Georg Woempner died in 1854, and about this time her older brother left for the California goldfields. Josephine, her younger sister, and her mother continued to live in St. Louis....

Shields, George Oliver (1846-1925), author, editor, and conservationist

Shields, George Oliver (26 August 1846–11 November 1925), author, editor, and conservationist, was born in Batavia, Ohio, the son of John F. Shields and Eliza J. Dawson. He attended public school in Delaware County, Iowa, for only three months, which was the extent of his formal education. In late 1863 or early 1864 he enlisted in the Union army. He took part in Sherman’s “march to the sea” and was wounded in action at Resaca, Georgia, in May 1864. Shields was discharged from the army in July 1865, following what appears to have been a lengthy convalescence. After his discharge he traveled west, serving for a short time as an immigration agent in New Mexico. By some accounts, Shields was probably married, although few details are actually known....
