Rummel, Joseph Francis (14 October 1876–08 November 1964), Roman Catholic clergyman and social leader, was born in Steinmauern, Baden, Germany, the son of Gustave Rummel and Teresa Bollweber. The family immigrated in 1882 to New York City, where the elder Rummel, initially a shoemaker, worked as a rent collector for a brewery with large property holdings. Young Rummel became a naturalized U.S. citizen on 2 February 1888. He attended St. Boniface Elementary School, where classes were still taught in German, and later St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, New Hampshire, from which he received a B.A. in 1896. He studied at St. Joseph Seminary in Yonkers, New York, and the North American College in Rome, Italy, from which he received his S.T.D. in 1903....
