Dodge, David Low (14 June 1774–23 April 1852), merchant and peace reformer, was born in Brooklyn, Connecticut, the son of David Dodge and Mary Stuart (widow of the late William Earl), farmers. Dodge was raised in a strict Calvinist family and remained involved in religious matters all his life. He spent much of his formative years working on the farm. He received a limited common school education. Although he was largely self-taught, Dodge became a schoolteacher at age nineteen. Dudley, Helena Stuart (31 August 1858–29 September 1932), settlement house worker and peace activist, was born in Florence, Nebraska, the daughter of Judson H. Dudley, a land developer, and Caroline Bates. Her early life was rather unsettled as the Dudley family moved about the West in pursuit of her father’s real estate ventures. Helena Dudley did not attend college until the age of twenty-six when she spent a year at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She then went on to Bryn Mawr college, graduating with the first class in 1889 with a degree in biology. Like so many other college-educated women of her generation, she became a teacher, first at the Pratt Institute and, a year later, at the Packer Institute, both in Brooklyn, New York....

Muste, Abraham Johannes (08 January 1885–11 February 1967), labor and peace activist, was born in Zierikzee, the Netherlands, the son of Martin Muste, a coachman and teamster, and Adriana Jonker. The family immigrated to the United States in January 1891, landing at Ellis Island and settling amid the Dutch community of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Muste attended Hope Preparatory School and Hope College, institutions sponsored by the Dutch Reformed Church of America, and graduated in 1905. He spent a year teaching Greek and Latin at Northwestern Classical Academy in Orange City, Iowa, before matriculating at the theological seminary of the Dutch Reformed Church in New Brunswick, New Jersey....
