Proskauer, Joseph Meyer (06 August 1877–11 September 1971), judge, political adviser, and Jewish communal leader, was born in Mobile, Alabama, the son of Alfred Proskauer, a bank cashier, and Rebecca Leinkauf. Born into a southern Jewish family of German and Hungarian descent, Proskauer was educated at Columbia College (B.A., 1896) and Columbia Law School (LL.B., 1899) and began practicing law in New York City in partnership with college friend James Rosenberg in 1900. Rosenman, Samuel Irving (13 February 1896–24 June 1973), jurist and presidential adviser, was born in San Antonio, Texas, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants Sol Rosenman and Ethel Paler. His parents settled in New York City, where Rosenman attended the Manhattan public schools. He graduated from Columbia College, Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude, in 1915. In 1917, after completing two years at the Columbia Law School, he enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army and was discharged in August 1919 as a second lieutenant.
