Stringfellow, Frank William (26 April 1928–02 March 1985), lawyer and theologian, was born in Johnston, Rhode Island, the son of Frank Stringfellow, a hosiery mill worker, and Margaret Abbott. Stringfellow grew up in Northampton, Massachusetts, graduated from Bates College in 1949, and was awarded a Rotary International Fellowship to study political theory at the London School of Economics the next year. In 1950 he entered the U.S. Army and served with the Second Armored Division in Germany. Following his army service, he entered the Harvard Law School.
