Lazar, Swifty (28 March 1907–30 December 1993), talent agent, was born Irving Paul Lazar on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City, the son of Samuel Mortimer Lazar, a produce wholesaler, and Stari DeLongpre. Lazar graduated from Fordham University and received a law degree from Brooklyn Law School in 1931. He practiced law in New York, initially specializing in bankruptcies and foreclosures. He soon switched to entertainment law and represented singers and musicians who were clients of the newly formed Music Corporation of America (MCA). In 1935 he abandoned his law practice in favor of representing his clients as an agent. The change enabled him to earn 10 percent of the booking fees, rather than the 1 percent he received as an attorney....
