Brinton, Howard Haines (24 July 1884–09 April 1973), and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton (19 October 1887–28 October 1969), Quaker educators, were born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Iowa, respectively. Howard was the son of Edward Brinton and Ruthanna Brown, farmers. Anna was the daughter of Charles E. Cox, a businessman and educator, and Lydia Shipley Bean. Murray, Lindley (22 April 1745–16 January 1826), grammarian and Quaker moralist, was born in Swetara, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of Mary Lindley and Robert Murray. His father’s success as a merchant took the family from North Carolina to New York City. Lindley and his brother, John Murray, Jr., were sent to the Friends School in Philadelphia but were then summoned as apprentices in their father’s firm, Murray, Sansom & Co., which became the largest New York shipowners.
