Hirschfelder, Arthur Douglas (29 September 1879–11 October 1942), pharmacologist and cardiologist, was born in San Francisco, California, the son of Joseph Oakland Hirschfelder, a physician, and Clara Honigsberg. Joseph Hirschfelder, who was professor of medicine at Cooper Medical College (later Stanford University School of Medicine), had done postgraduate studies in Germany and was active in clinical research.
