Thomson, Samuel (09 February 1769–04 October 1843), botanic physician, was born in Alstead, New Hampshire, the son of John Thomson and Hannah Cobb, farmers. He received one month’s formal education but otherwise was self-taught. As a young boy, he developed an intense interest in botanical medicine and spent much of his spare time in the company of an old root and herb doctor, from whom he learned the names and uses of various plants.
