Emery, Henry Crosby (21 December 1872–06 February 1924), economist and businessman, was born in Ellsworth, Maine, the son of Lucilius Alonzo Emery and Anne Stetson Crosby. His father was a respected lawyer who served as chief justice of the Maine Supreme Court and as a professor of medical jurisprudence at Bowdoin College. His mother instilled in her son a tolerant Christian spirit. After attending primary and secondary schools in Ellsworth, Emery entered Bowdoin College at age sixteen. His academic interests included economics, literature, and philosophy. He earned a B.A. from Bowdoin in 1892. He studied economics in graduate school, earning an M.A. from Harvard in 1893 and a Ph.D. from Columbia in 1896....

Hauge, Gabriel Sylfest (07 March 1914–24 July 1981), economist, White House aide, and banker, was born in Hawley, Minnesota, the son of Soren Gabrielson Hauge, a Lutheran minister, and Anna B. Thompson. Hauge lived in the small town of Hawley until he enrolled in Concordia College at Moorhead, Minnesota, in 1931. Active in clubs as well as the student newspaper and radio station, he was elected class president each of his first three years. White, Harry Dexter (09 October 1892–16 August 1948), Treasury Department official and moving force in the establishment of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund, was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of Sarah Magilewski and Jacob White, Jews who had emigrated to America from Lithuania shortly before he was born. Following his graduation from high school, White worked in the family hardware business until World War I broke out, at which time he became a volunteer in the army. Commissioned as a first lieutenant, he served in France but did not engage in combat. Just before going overseas, White married Russian-born Anne Terry, who later became a successful writer of children’s books. They had two daughters....
