Chisolm, Alexander Robert (19 November 1834–10 March 1910), soldier and financier, was born in Beaufort, South Carolina, the son of Edward Newfville Chisolm and Mary Elizabeth Hazzard, planters. Orphaned at an early age, he was sent to New York City to be raised by an aunt. In 1852 he quit his studies at Columbia College to return to “Chisolm’s Island,” his family’s ancestral estate sixty miles south of Charleston.
