Murray, Lindley (22 April 1745–16 January 1826), grammarian and Quaker moralist, was born in Swetara, near Lancaster, Pennsylvania, the son of Mary Lindley and Robert Murray. His father’s success as a merchant took the family from North Carolina to New York City. Lindley and his brother, John Murray, Jr., were sent to the Friends School in Philadelphia but were then summoned as apprentices in their father’s firm, Murray, Sansom & Co., which became the largest New York shipowners.
