Huntington, James Otis Sargent (23 July 1854–10 July 1935), founder of the monastic Order of the Holy Cross of the Episcopal church, was born in Roxbury, Massachusetts, the son of Frederic Dan Huntington and Hannah Dane Sargent. His parents, both of Puritan stock, imbued their children with a strong sense of civic responsibility and particularly with passionate concern for the needy. Huntington was profoundly influenced by his father, who had been a Unitarian minister and professor of moral ethics at Harvard University before joining the Episcopal church.
