Stiegel, Henry William (13 May 1729–10 January 1785), glassmaker and iron founder, was born in Cologne, Germany, the son of John Frederick Stiegel and Dorothea Elizabeth (maiden name unknown). After the death of his father, Stiegel came to America with his mother and a younger brother, arriving on 31 August 1750 in Philadelphia. Stiegel married Elizabeth Huber in 1752. She was the daughter of Jacob Huber, owner of the Elizabeth Furnace in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, one of the most significant and long-standing iron foundries in eighteenth-century America. Stiegel apparently learned the ironmaking trade from his father-in-law and took over management of the operation in 1757. Henry and Elizabeth had two children before her death in February 1758.
