Stone, Horatio (25 December 1808–25 August 1875), sculptor and lecturer, was born in Jackson, Washington County, New York, the son of Reuben Stone and Nancy Fairchild, farmers. He began wood sculpting at an early age, but his father preferred him to be about his farm chores. As a result Stone left home abruptly and didn’t communicate with his parents for many years. He studied and practiced medicine in New York between 1841 and 1847. Little else is known about his formal education....
