Fromkin, Victoria A. (16 May 1923–19 January 2000), linguist and university administrator, was born Victoria Alexandra Landish in Passaic, New Jersey, the daughter of Henry Landish, a set designer for the theater, and Rose Lillian Ravitz Landish. The family moved to Los Angeles where Fromkin graduated from Belmont High School. She continued her education at the University of California, Berkeley, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in economics in 1944. A self-described “professional radical revolutionary” (quoted in Cheng and Sybesma, p. 1), Fromkin worked without pay for liberal and radical causes before and after she married Jack Fromkin in 1948.
