Mayo, Katherine (24 January 1867–09 October 1940), writer, was born in Ridgeway, Pennsylvania, the daughter of James Henry Mayo, a mining engineer, and Harriet Elizabeth Ingraham. Mayo and her family moved regularly as her father pursued mining opportunities. She was educated at private schools in Boston and Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she lived between 1883 and 1888.
