Lalumiere, Stanislaus Petit (15 Feb. 1822–23 Mar. 1895), Jesuit priest and cofounder of Marquette College was born in Vincennes, Indiana, the son of Antione and Suzanne Cartier Lalumiere. Vincennes, settled in 1702 and the oldest town in what would become the state of Indiana, was a wilderness that was still twenty years more advanced than the frontier. The family’s original name of Petit had given way to the honorific “Lalumiere,” applied to an ancestor famed for rescuing trappers and others lost in the wilds of New France....
