Schwatka, Frederick (29 September 1849–02 November 1892), army officer and arctic explorer, was born in Galena, Illinois, the son of Frederick Schwatka, a cooper, and Amelia (maiden name unknown). At an early age he migrated with his family to Oregon. The lure of the frontier influenced Schwatka for the rest of his life. As a young man, he worked as a printer and attended Willamette University. In 1867 he obtained an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating in 1871, he became a lieutenant in the Third United States Cavalry....
