Crisler, Fritz (12 January 1899–19 August 1982), football coach and athletic administrator, was born Herbert Orin Crisler outside Earlville, Illinois, the son of Albert Crisler, a farmer, and Catherine Thompson. Since Crisler was small in stature, he did not play football at Mendota High School. In 1917 he was admitted to the University of Chicago with an academic scholarship.
