Ball, Bob (28 Mar. 1914–29 Jan. 2008), public official and leading expert on the U.S. Social Security program, was born Robert Myers Ball in New York City. Ball’s father, Archey Decatur Ball, was a Methodist minister of the social gospel tradition, and his mother, Laura Elizabeth Crump, taught history in the public schools.
