Potter, Louis McClellan (14 November 1873–29 August 1912), sculptor and etcher, was born in Troy, New York, the son of Louis Potter and Mary Elizabeth McClellan, occupations unknown. He studied painting with portraitist Charles Noel Flagg at the Connecticut League of Art Students in Hartford. During his summer vacations he also possibly worked with Flagg’s brother, Montague Flagg. In 1896 Potter graduated from Trinity College, also in Hartford, earning a B.A. He soon departed for three years in Paris and received instruction in painting from Luc-Olivier Merson.
