Bernays, Edward (22 November 1891–09 March 1995), public relations counsel, was born in Vienna, Austria, the son of Eli Bernays, a merchant and grain exporter, and Anna Freud, sister of Sigmund Freud. When he was one year old, his family immigrated to the United States, and he enjoyed a comfortable upbringing in New York City. At his father’s request he attended Cornell University’s school of agriculture and received a B.S. in 1912, but he soon abandoned agriculture, first for editing and then to work as a Broadway pressagent.
