Taliaferro, Hardin Edwards (1811–02 November 1875), author and Baptist minister, was born Mark Hardin Taliaferro in Surry County, North Carolina, the son of Charles Taliaferro, a farmer and political leader, and Sallie Burroughs. Taliaferro (pronounced Toll-i-ver) grew up in a prosperous and prominent family in the mountains of northwestern North Carolina. His father served in the North Carolina House of Commons (1811–1813). By his own account, Hardin, nicknamed “Skitt,” spent a happy childhood, often listening to colorful tales told by relatives and family friends....
