Seaborg, Glenn T. (19 April 1912–25 February 1999), scientist and Nobel laureate in chemistry, was born Glen Theodore Seaborg in Ishpeming, Michigan, the son of Herman Theodore Seaborg, an iron worker whose parents were Swedish immigrants, and Selma Olivia Erickson Seaborg, who came to Ishpeming from Sweden at the age of 19. Glen learned Swedish before he learned English, and although he was proficient in English by the time he started kindergarten, he was so shy that he was afraid to raise his hand to ask the teacher's permission to go to the bathroom. A tall boy, he was known by the nickname “Lanky.”...
