Alvarez, Francisco Sanchez (29 November 1928–31 March 1980), chemist, was born in Jalapa, Veracruz, Mexico. Little is known of his childhood, including the names of his parents. He prepared for college studies at Christopher Columbus College, then received his B.S. in chemistry in 1948 at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City. In 1953, while working toward a Chem.D. at the same institution, he joined the chemical firm of Syntex (Mexico) as a research assistant. The following year he married Yolanda Dragonne, with whom he would have four children.
