Nyswander, Dorothy B. (29 September 1894–18 December 1998), public health official, was born Dorothy Bird in Reno, Nevada, the daughter of Albert Dixon Bird, a businessman who later became an accountant, and Margaret Cowan Millar Bird. She grew up in Topaz, California, and after attending a local elementary school returned to Reno and completed high school before entering the University of Nevada. A precocious student, Bird skipped a year of high school and received both her B.A. and M.A. in mathematics in 1915. Following graduation, she taught high school English and mathematics in Elko, Nevada, for a year before going back to the University of Nevada for additional graduate work.
