Richards, Alfred Newton (22 March 1876–24 March 1966), pharmacologist, was born in Stamford, New York, the son of Reverend Leonard E. Richards, a Presbyterian minister, and Mary Elizabeth Burbank, a schoolteacher. From the beginning, religion played an important part in Richards’s life: his mother named him for her best friend’s father, Reverend Alfred Newton. Not only did his father have religious training, but his mother held a degree from Granville Female Seminary.
