Parrish, Joseph (11 November 1818–15 January 1891), physician, philanthropist, and pioneering advocate of the medical treatment of alcoholism, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Joseph Parrish, Sr., a prominent Quaker physician, and Susanna Cox. Educated at the Friends’ schools in Philadelphia and by private tutors, Parrish subsequently earned his M.D. at the University of Pennsylvania in 1844.
