Griggs, John William (10 July 1849–28 November 1927), attorney general of the United States and governor of New Jersey, was born in Sussex County, New Jersey, the son of Daniel Griggs and Emeline Johnson, prosperous farmers. Griggs graduated from Lafayette College in 1868 after working as a railroad ticket agent to pay for his education.
