Caperton, William Banks (30 June 1855–21 December 1941), admiral, U.S. Navy, was born in Spring Hill, Tennessee, the son of Samuel B. Caperton and Mary Jane Childress. Following Caperton’s early education at Spring Hill Academy, in 1871 Congressman Washington C. Whitthorne gave him an appointment as midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy.
