Barker, James William (05 December 1815–26 June 1869), nativist political leader, was born in White Plains, New York. Little is known about Barker’s early life except that he worked in New York as a clerk and later opened there his own dry goods business, whose success made him quite wealthy. By the early 1850s Barker was active in the New York Whig party....
