Meredith, Samuel (1741–10 February 1817), treasurer of the United States, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Reese Meredith, a merchant, and Martha Carpenter. He attended Dr. Allison’s Academy in Philadelphia and then joined his father’s business. As a Philadelphia merchant concerned with the American colonies’ conflicts with Britain, Meredith signed the nonimportation resolutions adopted in Philadelphia on 7 November 1765.
