Middleton, Arthur (1681–07 September 1737), planter, politician, and acting governor of South Carolina, was born in Carolina in 1681, the son of Edward Middleton and Sarah Fowell. In 1678 and 1679, respectively, his father and uncle had emigrated from England to South Carolina, where they accumulated large landholdings and founded a political dynasty that survived until after the American Civil War. Edward Middleton and his wife acquired a land grant of 1,500 acres near Charles Town, in the Goose Creek region of the province, and established “The Oaks,” the family’s first plantation. Arthur Middleton augmented the family’s landholdings throughout his life but made The Oaks his home....
