Alice Hamilton

Alice Hamilton (1869–1970) was a key figure in the field of occupational medicine from the Progressive Era through the middle of the twentieth century. She sought to change the poor and deteriorating occupational health status of American laborers by studying and publicizing the dangers of industrial toxicity and disease, particularly as they affected women and unorganized workers. A physician, activist, and investigator, Hamilton was also the first woman faculty member of the Harvard Medical School.

The February update of the American National Biography features four new essays, including Christopher Reeve, Superman actor and activist for people with spinal cord injuries; White House press corps journalist Helen Thomas; Alice Rivlin, economist who served as vice chair of the Federal Reserve and director of the Office of Management and Budget; and S. Willard Saxton, printmaker, Civil War veteran, and federal government employee.
