Young, Chic (09 January 1901–14 March 1973), cartoonist, was born Murat Bernard Young in Chicago, Illinois, the son of James L. Young, a shoestore proprietor, and Martha Techen, an artist. He completed high school in St. Louis—where the nickname “Chic” may have been applied to recall his city of origin—and went on to study art in Chicago, New York, and Cleveland.
