Sitting Bull (1831–15 December 1890), Sioux chief, was born Tatanka Yotanka, probably on the Grand River in present-day South Dakota, the son of Sitting Bull and Her-Holy-Door. His father bore the name Sitting Bull, which connotes a buffalo bull of great strength and endurance planted solidly on his haunches to fight to the death, until his son became a warrior at age fourteen, at which time he gave his name to the boy and took the name Jumping Bull. His father died in battle with Crow warriors in 1859, but his mother lived with him until her death in 1884....
