Ordway, John (1775–1817), soldier and member of the Lewis and Clark expedition, was born in Dumbarton, New Hampshire. Sergeant John Ordway is one of the least known of the noncommissioned officers of the Meriwether Lewis and William Clark expedition, despite being the most diligent journal-keeper with the Corps of Discovery. He made an entry for every single day the explorers went out, from 14 May 1804 to 23 September 1806. Like so many men of the party, however, Ordway lived an obscure life before and after his brief season of glory and left little trace of himself beyond his expedition years....
