Roach, Max (10 January 1924–16 August 2007), jazz drummer, was born Maxwell Leland Roach in Newland township, Pasquotank County, North Carolina, the son of Alphonso Roach, a laborer, and Cressie Sanders. The family moved to the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, New York, in 1928. His father washed vehicles at a garage, and his mother took odd jobs. When both were working, Roach was cared for at their church, where his mother sang. There he became immersed in African American gospel music, first as a pianist and then as a drummer. He graduated from Brooklyn’s Boys High School in 1942....
