Cox, Wally (24 December 1924–15 February 1973), comic actor, was born Wallace Maynard Cox in Royal Oaks, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit, the son of George W. Cox, an advertising copywriter, and Eleanor Atkinson Cox, who wrote mysteries, publishing them under the pseudonym Eleanor Blake. Cox's parents divorced during his childhood, and he thereafter led a peripatetic existence with his mother and sister, living at various times in rural Michigan, Chicago, suburban New York, New York City, and Detroit, where he graduated from high school. Shy, undersized, and physically awkward, Cox was the target of persistent bullying in school, but he excelled academically and developed an interest in botany....
