Mayfield, Curtis (03 June 1942–26 December 1999), rhythm and blues performer and composer, was born Curtis Lee Mayfield, Jr., in Chicago, Illinois, the first child of Curtis Lee Mayfield (born Curtis Lee Cooper) and Marion Washington. He was raised in impoverished circumstances by his mother and his grandmother, Sadie Riley, and rarely saw his father, who deserted the family after the fifth child was born. By the time Mayfield attended Wells High School, the family had settled on Chicago's North Side in the Cabrini-Green housing project. His paternal grandmother, Anna Belle Mayfield, was a minister, and Mayfield sang in her church's gospel group, the Northern Jubilee Singers, which included his three cousins and future rhythm and blues star Jerry Butler....
